Association of Institutions for Feminist Education and Research in Europe (AOIFE)
aoife.gifAOIFE was founded in December 1996 at a European women's conference at the University of Limerick, Ireland. It is a European association for Women's Studies based on institutional membership, which links institutions dedicated to initiating and supporting feminist education and research in Europe. It is a forum for collectively addressing and acting on issues concerning Women's Studies by means of co-operation and networking.

ATHENA

ATHENA is a Socrates Thematic Network Project in which 80 Women's and Gender Studies Programmes at universities, research institutes and documentation centres in Europe participate. ATHENA was created in 1996 by the Association of Institutions for Feminist Education and Research in Europe (AOIFE), and was selected as a Socrates Thematic Network Project in September 1998. The ATHENA central coordination is located at Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Baltic State Network: Women in Science and High Technology (BASNET Forumas)
BASNET, funded under FP6, aims at the establishment of the interregional Baltic States Network “Women in Sciences and High Technology” among women working groups, professional organisations and corresponding departments of the governmental institutions. Its final goal is the creation of the common Baltic States strategy to increase women’s participation in Sciences and High Technology. It will help to compare and evaluate the existing policy measures and develop synergies between the national and the regional policies and formulate the new standpoint to the problem.

Building a European Network of Academic Mentoring Programmes for Women Scientists (EUMENT-NET)
EUMENT-NET is a mentoring project funded under the European Commission’s 6th Framework Programme (FP6). EUMENT-NET aims to strengthen the position of women scientists in academia and leading and decision-making positions, through the instrument of mentoring, by building up a network of mentoring programmes supporting junior women scientists from various regions in the wider Europe.

Commission on Gender and Geography
The Commission on Gender and Geography, part of the International Geographical Union is an active group of about 350 geographers from 50 different countries in all parts of the world. The Commission has an active program on gender issues in many countries.

European Federation of Geologists

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)
embl (de).gifEMBL is an international research organisation with its main laboratory in Heidelberg (Germany) and four outstations in Hinxton (UK), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany) and Monterotondo (Italy). The main activities of EMBL are dedicated to basic molecular biology research, technology development, service provision and advanced training. Research at EMBL emphasizes experimental analysis at multiple levels of biological organisation, from the molecule to the organism, as well as computational biology, bioinformatics and systems biology.

European Network of Women and Gender in Archaeology
The European Network of Women and Gender in Archaeology is a network under formation. For the time being, the network has footholds in Spain and in Norway, but they are actively seeking contact with individuals and organisations all over Europe that can join in creating a permanent organisation working on promoting women in the academic society, women research in archaeology as well as research on gender and women in the past. As archaeologists, many of their preconceptions on gender, religion, ethnicity and other controversial issues are based in ideas about the distant past. An important aim of the network will be to secure a place for such issues on the European research agenda.


European Physical Society – Gender Equality Group
Created in 1968, the European Physical Society (EPS) is a not for profit association whose purpose is to promote physics and physicists in Europe. EPS provides an international forum to discuss science and policy issues of interest to its members. It represents over 100,000 members and physicists through its 40 national member societies. Its activities revolve around the themes of promoting excellent physics research, supplying a European view on important questions relating to physics, acting as a catalyst bringing together physicists in different countries, and acting as a liaison between physicists working in different fields.

EVAN&PALAEO – Gender Board

The European Virtual Anthropology Network focuses on the integration of new morphological analysis methods from biomathematics, computer science and bioengineering in the context of interdisciplinary studies of anatomical variability in humans, their ancestors, and their close relatives for the purpose of applications in the academic, clinical, industrial, and private and public research sectors. The Gender Board is concerned with equality of opportunity and experience for all members of EVAN. Many issues it deals with are related to general equality, albeit targeted towards gender. It has four main functions: monitor gender equality, ensure gender equality, co-ordinate measures to promote equality between men and women and make links to existing initiatives promoting women in science.

International Federation for Research in Women's History
The International Federation for Research in Women's History was founded in April 1987. Its aim is to encourage and coordinate research in all aspects of women's history at international level, by promoting exchange of information through publications and regular conferences and meetings.

International Network for Research on Gender and Empowerment
Created in 1996, the Network aims at promoting trans-national projects, cross-border research, conferences, seminars, publications and related initiatives in the areas of: gender studies, institution buildings and governance, public ethics, social justice and cosmopolitan democracy, European citizenship and human mobility, women and science, critique of violence and the violation of human rights. It also promotes perspectives for social policies through research, international co-operation, networking and linkages among scholars, research centres, NGOs, media, business and policy makers.


L'ORÉAL-UNESCO
In 1998, L’Oreal and UNESCO joined forces to promote women scientific research by creating the For Women in Science partnership. Since then, 47 L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Award Laureates have been recognised for their careers and 105 Fellows have been encouraged to pursue their scientific vocations. The programme of National Fellowships, in place in more than 20 countries has already allowed 205 young women to continue their research.

Network of Excellence on Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation: The Role of the EU (GARNET)
GARNET is funded under FP6 and comprises 42 leading research centres and universities. Its aim is to develop a world-class multi-disciplinary network of scientific excellence of researchers, analysts and practitioners with expertise in key issues and themes in global and regional governance. Four themes guide GARNET’s integrating activities: (i) the theory and practice of regionalism and regionalisation; (ii) the identification of key elements in the regulatory framework of governance, especially how best to enhance collective action problem solving at regional and global levels; (iii) policy issues in global governance (trade, finance, security, environment, technology, development, social production and gender inequality, and disease); (iv) the role of the EU in the advancement of research and policy in themes (i)-(iii).

Nordic Institute for Women’s Studies and Gender Research (NIKK)
nikk new.jpgEstablished by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1995, NIKK is a transnational resource and information centre on gender research and gender equality policies in the Nordic countries. NIKK is currently located at the University of Oslo in Norway. NIKK employs research coordinators, researchers, information advisors and administrative personnel from three of the Nordic countries.

Nordic Network of Women in Physics (Norwip)
norwip (no).gifEstablished in 2005, Norwip is a network of female physicists in Denmark, Finland, Island, Norway and Sweden. In addition, Russia is represented as the first of the neighbouring countries towards the East. The objective of the Nordic Network of Women in Physics is to significantly strengthen the recruitment, education and career possibilities of Nordic female students and young researchers.

PROMETEA
Funded under FP6, PROMETEA aims to develop a better understanding of gender issues in engineering and technology research settings, in order to propose effective measures and recommendations to empower women engineers’ careers in academic and industrial research in Europe. A technological and economical sustainable development depends on the ability to promote a diverse and creative research sector, which is a key issue both in the European and in national research policies.

  UPGEM_banner.gifUPGEM investigates problems of retaining competent scientists, especially women, in academia due to diversity in workplace cultures and culture historically created boundaries between practices. One of the key tasks is to identify gender barriers and determine how they relate to the recognition of what is perceived as competency in everyday life at physics institutes at universities across Europe. UPGEM has identified three workplace cultures (Hercules, Caretakers and Worker Bee) which affect who stays in and who leaves academia. Virtual Integrated Unit on Gender Mainstreaming of the Complex Metallic Alloys (VIU-GM)
cma.jpgComplex Metallic Alloys (CMA) is one of the European Networks of Excellence (NoE) organised within FP6. It was created to help strengthen the competitiveness of metallic materials for the benefit of European industries. The CMA network started its activities in July 2005 and involves 394 researchers and PhD students from 19 academic, research institutions and major industry partners in 12 European countries.
The CMA Virtual Integrated Unit – Gender Mainstreaming (VIU-GM) is one of the 16 different units in the CMA structure. The main seat of the Unit is at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland. One of the main objectives of the VIU-GM is to improve the gender balance of the CMA teams. The Network is committed to promoting the presence of women in science in general, and materials science in particular.
